Synopsis
Migration, Equality and Racism trigger ever more salient societal debates. More than 80 VUB academics and co-authors joined forces for this book. Philosophers, lawyers, psychologists, health scientists, sociologists, geographers, criminologists, communication and political scientists … look at migration, equality and racism from different disciplinary angles. Together they aim to contribute to an exercise of humanism as a praxis of criticism or a ‘technique of trouble-making’, in the words of Edward Said. Through 44 thought-provoking and informed opinion pieces, they question widespread beliefs on migration, equality and racism and propose solutions that might disturb. Let this book be a source of inspiration for those who want to spark an informed debate on the ever more salient issues of migration, equality and racism, for those who want to learn more on how and why humanism has often remained an empty box for migrants and racialized groups. Or for those who are in search of inspiration for a just future for all. Migration, Equality and Racism is the work of Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) think tank POINcaré and was created under the direction of Ilke Adam, Tundé Adefioye, Serena D’Agostino, Nick Schuermans and Florian Trauner.

Ilke Adam
Ilke Adam is an associate professor in political science at the Institute for European Studies at VUB. Together with Florian Trauner she directs the Brussels Interdisciplinary Research centre on Migration and Minorities (BIRMM) at the same university. Her research focuses on immigration, integration and anti-discrimination policies, and anti-racist activism.
Tundé Adefioye
Tundé Adefioye is a city-dramaturg at the Brussels’ theatre KVS and founding member of the youth platform Urban Woorden. He is also alecturer of Cultural Criticism at St Lucas School of Arts Antwerp.
Serena D’Agostino
Serena D’Agostino is a postdoctoral Researcher at the VUB's Department of Political Science and the Institute for European Studies. Her research focuses on Diversity Policies and Politics in Europe; Equality and Non-discrimination; Intersectional Mobilizations; Political Intersectionality; Roma Rights and Mobilizations; Roma Women’s Activism; Social Movements.
Florian Trauner
Florian Trauner holds a Jean Monnet Chair at the Institute for European Studies of the Vrije Universiteit Brussels. Together with Ilke Adam, he also coordinates the VUB’s Interdisciplinary Centre of Expertise on Migration and Minorities (BIRMM). Nick Schuermans
Nick Schuermans is postdoctoraal onderzoeker en onderwijsmedewerker bij Cosmopolis, het Centrum voor Stedelijk Onderzoek van de Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Hij is de dagelijkse coördinator van het interdisciplinaire onderzoeksprogramma Cities & Newcomers van de VUB. Hij doceert ook in de Erasmus Mundus MSc 4CITIES, de Master of Science in Urban Studies en in geografie-programma’s.
